When I first moved to Halifax in 2003, having accepted a job in the Spryfield community, never in a million lifetimes had I dreamed that one day I’d lay down roots for both my family and my business. I moved to Circle Drive into a basement apartment (with my then in-laws) while my partner still worked outside the city. I walked the short jaunt to work which was in the same building as the old KFC on the Herring Cove Road. When I wasn’t working, I explored the city hopping on and off the transit.
Having always enjoyed an active lifestyle, I bought a membership to the downtown Halifax YMCA. It was there that I thought about certifying as a fitness instructor and sought out the certification process. A few months later, I mentored with a teacher at Nobody’s and eventually started teaching classes of my own at the Tantallon location. Long story short, for a brief stint, I live in Hammonds Plains and then in Clayton Park, worked in Tantallon, Halifax and Bedford, before I found my way to Spryfield and my home.
The journey to today is a direct reflection of the many, many opportunities I’ve had and the people I’ve met over the last 16 years. From a young graphic designer and food photographer with Priszm Graphics, to a newbie fitness instructor, weightless counsellor, vinyl sign installer, manager and owner, there are so many people who’ve supported me along the way. Most recently, Shanti Hot Yoga and On The Mat Halifax to which I owe a huge debt of gratitude for inviting me into their studios to share in the practice of yoga. And also, to Breathing Space Yoga, the studio and the TV show, which inspired me to pursue the path of yoga as both student and teacher.
Last, but certainly not least, the students and my family, who’ve allowed me to express my understanding and experiences by offering a humble reflection of what yoga is for me. As the Bhagavad Gita, the classical Sanskrit scripture, explains, “Yoga is a journey of the Self, through the Self, to the Self.”
Here’s to new beginnings and the next leg of this journey. Clearing out the old to make way for the new!
